#ChosenforChevening

My long-winded path to public health has come to this. I’m thrilled to share that I’ve been #ChosenforChevening!

This is a story for people with many interests and creative pursuits.

Those who do not and would not want to fit into a mold. Who were often told to “stay in your lane” and focus on just one thing to be successful in life. Who feel most alive when following their curiosity without guilt or expectations. I see you.

My career spans 15 years in various fields, with more than a handful of side projects. I used to envy people who were so certain about what they wanted to do. I thought my infinite curiosity was the bane of my existence – until I went into reflection mode while writing my motivational letters for universities and scholarships.

It’s when I shifted my perspective of a so-called weakness into a gift that I embraced how it enriched my life and career. It is easier for me to connect the dots, cross-pollinate ideas, and build relationships with people from different backgrounds.

I’m studying in the United Kingdom for a Master of Public Health degree, focusing on Outbreak Control and Health Protection, at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, the first institution in the world dedicated to research and teaching in tropical medicine. I was intimidated to apply to LSTM without any medical background, so I’m incredibly humbled that they saw merit in my experience and passion for a multidisciplinary approach to the complex but all-important field of public health.

The Chevening Scholarship is one of the most competitive awards worldwide. We’re told that it’s even more cutthroat this year, with over 60,000 eligible applications worldwide and over 1,100 from the Philippines. I am honored to be one of the 24 scholars chosen for the 2023/24 cohort, even made more special by the 40th Anniversary of the Chevening Awards this year. Thank you to the Chevening Awards and the British Embassy Manila for this honor.

I dedicate this honor to my family, friends, and mentors who encouraged and supported me through the grueling application process and the many years before it. They cheered me on especially when I did not make it to other scholarships and pushed me to keep trying. I thank my friends who reviewed my essays and shared tips to ace the Chevening application, and those who sent good vibes, prayed for me, and helped me manifest this dream into a reality.

Lastly, to loved ones and ancestors who are no longer around but have inspired me to lead a life of service, empathy, and joy — this is for you.
